Can I practice with my family or friends? Absolutely! The right kind of practice will speed your learning. Make sure you meet all the legal and safety requirements: · Check the rules for accompanying drivers (came with your provisional licence – they need to be over 21 and must have had a full UK or EC licence for 3 years) · Make sure the car is insured for you to drive. Usually it’s cheapest to get added to the policy for a family car. You can also insure yourself to drive almost any car as a learner for short periods. · Get a mirror for the accompanying driver to use · Display L-plates (we’ll show you a good one, that works even on cars with plastic on the front). After a few lessons, usually after you’ve got the hang of the emergency stop (you won’t have dual controls at home!), your instructor will suggest that it’s a good time to start private practice, and will advise you what to practice, and where. Cars and traffic conditions have changed, so you’re expected to drive differently from the way your parents were taught. We’ll point out the key differences so you can practice the right thing. REMEMBER—practice makes PERMAMENT. You’ll only be perfect if you’ve practiced the right thing. A combination of private practice with professional lessons to keep you on track is the best way to learn.
